Description

Geophysics survey identified a series of weak linear anomalies. These features likely represent infilled ditches of former enclosures (B1).
Trial trench evaluation confirmed the presence of a late Iron Age to Roman farmstead comprising rectilinear enclosures, pits, postholes and at least one trackway. The settlement likely established post-Conquest. Evidence for iron smelting was found in the form of slags deriving from nontapping or minimally tapping furnaces. Animal bone evidence indicates horse being the most common during the Late Iron Age/Early Roman period by Number of Identified Specimens. In the mid to late Roman period this changes to pig. Pig more often found on Roman military or urban sites. A single sherd of Saxon pottery was found during fieldwalking, but no Saxon features were identified during the evaluation (B2).
