Description
An almost contiguous swathe of medieval and/or post medieval ridge and furrow cultivation, remnants of the former common open-field system, is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located across the south half of Stoke Hammond parish and centred at SP 87691 29346, the ridge and furrows in these blocks are predominantly aligned NW-SE to the west of the railway line. To the east of the railway, however, the ridge and furrow alignments are far more random. To the south of Common Farm, there are several areas where ridge and furrow has not been recorded, which may have been areas of historic pasture or possibly the result of arable cultivation practices removing any trace of what ridge and furrow once existed there. Almost all the ridge and furrow cultivation blocks are visible as extant earthworks on aerial photographs taken in the 1940s, but aerial photographs taken in 2019 and recent remote sensing data indicate that some almost all the blocks have been plough-levelled, possibly by changes to post-war agricultural regimes from the dominance of permanent pasture as described in the 1927 Victoria County History to more arable cultivation (1-14).
