Description

SAXON SWORD & SHIELD FOUND C1900 (B1) WITH A SKELETON & OTHER FRAGMENTS (B2).
(ANOTHER) SKELETON FOUND 1936 (B3).
ORIGINAL OS NGR: SP947 148, RESITED TO NGR (B5).
OS MAY HAVE CONFUSED THIS SITE WITH CASS 01274: INDEED THE 2 SITES MAY BE THE SAME. BOTH AREAS DESTROYED BY QUARRYING (B6-7).


947148. Pitstone. ? Inhumation burial. Bu 30 SW. 1936 Parrot noticed a leg bone protruding from the chalk face in Pitstone Pit 500' O.D. He uncovered the skeleton of a girl of c.
18 years, lying supine head E on the upper surface of the chalk under the topsoil. Parsons thought it an AS skeleton. It was said to be the second found on the site (B4).
Found in June 1936 by T.G. Parrot about 1/2 mile NE of Pitstone Church (B8)
(Re-sited to SP 937144 as Pitstone Pit is 1/2 mile SW, not NE, of the Church) (B9).
