ARTEFACTS FROM TREACHER COLLECTION. LABEL OMITS PROVENANCE APART FROM WEXHAM, BUT SAYS IT WAS PIT NICKNAMED 'MARBLE HEAD PIT' ON BOYN HILL TERRACE: LOCATION POSS SE OF BERRY FM.(BI1) NAME NOT KNOWN LOCALLY & NO LARGE SCALE GRAVEL EXTRACTIOIN AREA. OTHER FORMER PITS AT SU98878230 & 994582239(BI2)
SU 989830 A Palaeolithic handaxe and 2 flakes have been found in the general area of Wexham, and another 2 handaxes and a flake at Marblehead Pit Wexham. All are in Oxford Univ. Museum. 'Marblehead Pit' appears to be only a nickname for the pit according to a note accompanying the collection (B5).
There are three hand axes and three primary flakes in the Treacher Colln (Oxford Univ Mus) labelled 'Marblehead Pit', possibly that SE of Berry Farm, at SU 989828 (B1)
'Marblehead Pit' is not known locally, and according to local information there has never been large scale gravel extraction in the Wexham area. The feature shown on the OS 6" centred at SU 98908282 is an area of waste ground probably an old gravel pit. Alternative former pits are at SU 98878230 & SU 99458223. No further information (B6).
