Description

Linear features of medieval/post medieval date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located east of Bushey Close Spinney, Whaddon, and centred at SP 79795 33528. Earthworks appear to be a water channel, an earthwork bank that might be the continuation of a boundary, and three sides of a subrectangular ditch, 30m across where visible, that could be a small moat or boundary. It is situated on the north side of College Wood and Whaddon Chase and may be associated with Queen’s Park (MBC13234 - disemparked in reign of Charles II), these are possibly parkland features. The field names recorded for the parcel of land is Small Canals, the field to the south is Big Canals, which may refer to these ditches. The underlying geology is Stewartby Mudstone overlain with alluvium in places. (1-6)
