Description

A boundary bank of probable medieval date is visible on historical aerial photographs and remote sensing data as an earthwork and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located at The Common, Great Horwood and centred at SP 77515 31900. Low earthwork visible on lidar visualisation which appears to be the remnants of the boundary to Whaddon Chase as shown on the 1813 Ordnance Surveyor’s Drawing for Winslow. It continues the line of a boundary behind houses along the road, in a typical green-edge settlement; it is not on the Ordnance Survey map. The deserted settlement of The Common is recorded on the opposite (east) side of Nash Road (B4033), 100m to the east. No earthwork is clear on aerial photographs and modern land use appears to be pasture/grass. (1-3)
