- EXTRACTIVE PIT (Post-Medieval to Modern - 1540 AD to 1999 AD)
Description
A large extractive pit of post medieval/modern date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located on the north side of Little Horwood Airfield, in the parish of Great Horwood, within the area of the bomb stores and centred at SP 477921 230728. The pit has almost squared corners and measures 150x92m at its largest extents; the underlying geology is superficial deposits of alluvium at the southern edge, the whole underlain by Weymouth mudstone. This may have been associated with aggregate requirements during the constructions of the airfield. (1-2)
