Monument record MBC43990 - Ridge and furrow in the parish of Little Horwood

Field systems of medieval and post medieval date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data earthworks, levelled earthworks and cropmarks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located throughout the parish of Little Horwood and centred at SP 79187 30407. The area covered by Little Horwood Airfield, which lies mainly in the parish of Great Horwood, shows cropmarks that suggests that the whole of this area also had almost continuous coverage of ridge and furrow as is visible in the area of the parish outside the airfield. Earthworks appear well preserved in some areas of the parish but have been ploughed flat by modern arable land use in other areas, revealing some late prehistoric/Romano British enclsoures and other features as cropmarks. Near Wood End, Little Horwood, the ridge and furrow earthworks appear to fit around a subrectangular enclosure near Norbury Camp and the medieval road/settlement and moat there. Plough headlands, drainage ditches, are visible across the area. The pre-inclosure field system can be seen from the direction of the earthworks that have been mapped. (1-19)
