Description
A subrectangular enclosure and linear boundaries of uncertain date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant levelled earthworks and cropmarks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located approximately 400m north west of the Scheduled moat at Wood End, Little Horwood, and centred at SP 79675 31068. The enclosure and the straight linear boundaries are not aligned with any existing field boundaries and do not fit with other nearby boundaries very well, but ridge and furrow earthworks have been created within and around it. Settlement at Wood End (Little Horwood) nearby continues along the east side of the road between Little Horwood and Whaddon Chase which is recorded on historic mapping but these boundaries/enclosures are not. Lidar visualisation shows the subrectangular enclosure as a slight ditch within a flat field; modern land use is arable (1-6).
Cropmarks of a large trapezoidal enclosure of uncertain date visible on aerial photographs at SP 7963 3109. The enclosure is defined by a narrow ditch with straight sides and angled corners. It appears attached to a thin straight ditch with extends from the western corner of the field to meet the end of a modern field boundary between two adjacent fields to the east suggesting a more modern date to these features. The enclosure may be a woodland enclosure ditch. The course of several former field boundaries and medieval ridge and furrow can be seen as cropmarks within the field (7).
