Description
Evaluation trial trenching and test pitting carried out in November 2022 by KDK Archaeology in advance of proposed solar farm consttruction identified a single undated small shallow pit 0.96mX0.85m and 0.15m deep with gently sloping sides and flat base in trench 1. Trenches 1-3 all had a late post-medieval layer of dumped soil 0.29m-0.37m thick below the topsoil, interpreted as spoil from construction of the adjacent canal. A sandy silty clay alluvium at a depth of 0.78m in test pit 9 was interpretted as a former palaeochanel of the River Ouzel. See report for detail (B1).
Previous geophysical survey by Magnitude Surveys in August 2022 had identified remnant ridge and furrow, a former field boundary and a few weak anomalies of uncertain origin. See report for detail (B2).
