Description

A boundary of medieval date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located on the south side of College Wood, Great Horwood, and centred at SP 79408 32967. This boundary appears to be the northern end of an area of woodland, shown as Sallow Coppice (willows) on a conjectural map of the township at the end of the 14th century published in a PhD thesis. It is clearly visible as an earthwork, a ditch with a bank on either side, in the 1930s and can still be seen on modern lidar visualisations. There appears to be an entrance towards the centre. On the 1813 map Sallow Coppice has been incorporated in College wood but by the late 19th century it is outside the woodland and former woodland shows post medieval ridge and furrow earthworks.
