Description
Two mid-19th century spoil heaps created from a railway cutting construction is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located adjacent a deep cutting of the London North Western Railway line about 430 metres S of Crabtree Farm and centred at SP 81200 30594, the largest spoil heap is a sock-shaped mound that has been covered in woodland since at least 1881. Recent remote sensing data shows a series of finger-like ridges diverging from the west side, suggesting the spoil was deposited from this side during the construction of the railway cutting. Centred some 130 metres to the SW, the second and smaller spoil heap is about 73 x 27 metres. On aerial photographs taken in 2019, both features remain under woodland (1-3).
