Description

Sinuous trackways of probable medieval date are visible on historic aerial photographs as cropmarks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in a field south of Broadway Wood and centred at SP 81062 31984, these connected ditch features appear to represent trackways that converge and meet in an open area between Broadway Coppice, Rail Coppice, Foxholes Coppice, Penny Tree Coppice and Lodge Coppice, being woodlands of the former Whaddon Chase as depicted on an Ordnance Surveyor Drawing dated 1813. The field in which they are located is still depicted as rough pasture on the 1881 1st edition OS map, though only Broadway Coppice remains by that time, the other woodlands having been felled in the intervening years (1-4).
