Description

A subcircular ditched enclosure of uncertain date and function is visible on remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located within Thickbare Wood and centred at SP 81101 33217, a subcircular ditch is about 4 metres wide and broadens to 8 metres in places, that encloses an internal area about 46 metres in diameter at its widest point. From the W side of the enclosure ditch, a sinuous ditch extends westwards 6 metres before turning north for a further 56 metres. The enclosure is located within the former Whaddon Chase, a medieval hunting forest that remained a hunting chase until 1840, so may date anywhere from the Iron Age or Romano-British period to the post-medieval (1).
