Description
A low subcircular mound of uncertain date and function is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located within a paddock at Thrift Farm (nursery) on the A421 between Broadway Wood and Coddimoorhill Wood and centred at SP 81032 32477, the low earthwork mound is about 20 metres in diameter at its widest point. The mound is just visible on aerial photographs taken in the 1940s. It seems unlikely that this is the remains of a medieval or post-medieval windmill mound, lying at it did within former woodlands (Hogpound Coppice) within Whaddon Chase, which remained a hunting chase from the medieval until 1840 and is not recorded on the 1813 Ordnance Surveyor’s Drawing. It is possible that this is the much-levelled remains of a Bronze Age funerary monument, but this is speculative and requires further investigation (1-4).
