Description
A possible D-shaped ditched enclosure of uncertain date and function is visible on remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located within Coddimoorhill Wood and centred at SP 81060 32603, a linear ditch about 5.5 metres wide extends 40 metres WNW-ESE, turning SSE for 53 metres. The features are then truncated by a modern field boundary, with the ditch turning WSW for 52 metres, curving then NW for a further 54 metres. No evidence of the north-western corner of this feature, if it existed, is visible. The enclosure is located within the former Whaddon Chase, a medieval hunting forest that remained a hunting chase until 1840, so may date anywhere from the Iron Age or Romano-British period to the post-medieval (1).
