Description

A probably medieval curvilinear hollow way or boundary is visible on aerial photographs and remote sensing data as cropmarks and earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located across fields north of Whaddon Hall and centred at SP 80724 34767, a curving ditch between 6 and 17 metres wide links to a bank about 12 metres wide, in total extending about 1,030 metres in sections between SP 80276 35017 and SP 81178 34686. The bank appears as a modern field boundary through Whaddon Park, but the 1st Edition OS map represents a broken line of trees along its course at that time. Many sections of the ditch are overlaid by medieval blocks of ridge and furrow cultivation that flank Stratford Road, which suggest it pre-dates the last iteration of the ridge and furrow (1-2).
