Description

A fragmented network of probable medieval and/or post-medieval pre-inclosure field boundary ditches, trackways and building platform are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located over several fields W and N of Spring Grove Farm (formerly known as Mursley Grove) and centred at SP 80809 29416, the features extend over an area about 500 metres NW-SE and 360 metres NE-SW. On aerial photographs taken in 1944 and 1946, some of the ditches appear to link up with extant medieval field boundaries. The 1881 1st Edition OS map shows an association with linear tree alignments and the boundary ditches that would strengthen this interpretation. Centred at SP 80794 29226 is a subrectangular boundary ditch enclosing an internal area about 37 x 30 metres at its widest. The 1813 Ordnance Surveyors’ Drawing depicts a building standing on the approximate site of the enclosure and ditch at the road junction that was opposite the farm at that time. On aerial photographs taken in 2019 and recent remote sensing data, many of the features have been plough-levelled, though those closest to the farm remain extant (1-6).
