Description

A post-medieval extractive pit and an adjacent mound or platform of uncertain date and function is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and cropmarks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in a field about 259 metres SSW of Salden House Farm and centred at SP 82359 29528, an irregularly shaped pit is about 1,120 square metres in area and is immediately adjacent a D-shaped earthwork mound or platform of uncertain date and function that is about 37 x 38 metres at its widest, with a 3 metres wide ditch arcing from the S to the E facing sides about 57 metres. In a block of much plough-levelled medieval ridge and furrow cultivation immediately to the south, aerial photographs taken in 1944 and 1946 show at least two circular pits, 4 and 5 metres in diameter, that may be associated with the adjacent extraction. On aerial photographs taken in 2015 and 2019, the pits remain visible as cropmarks along with three further smaller pits that vary between 1 and 5 metres in diameter. The extractive pit, mound and boundary ditch features remain visible both as levelled earthworks and as cropmarks (1-5).
