Description

Post-medieval garden features are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in a field east of the B4032 Winslow Road in Swanbourne and centred at SP 80202 27134, the features comprise a network grid of connected ditches, as well as scarp slopes and linear earthwork banks, that form a series of rectilinear enclosures and platforms. There is also evidence of a possible pond. These features extend over an area about 112 metres aligned WSW-ENE and 236 metres NNW-SSE, an alignment that corresponds to the walled garden and other landscape features of Swanbourne House immediately opposite on the west side of the road. Some of the garden features described, however, are recorded on the 1881 1st Edition OS map clearly within the grounds of the late 16th century ‘The Old House’ in Swanbourne Village, where some of the ditches are recorded as tree-lined boundaries at that time (1-4).
