Description

A possible section of medieval road or drove road is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in fields south of Nearton End, Swanbourne and centred at SP 80546 26732, a sinuous earthwork bank up to 22 metres wide extends about 790 metres in sections, aligned W-E. It appears to link between the junction on Winslow Road of what appears on the 1813 Ordnance Surveyor Drawing to have been a drove road and the broad trackway south of Nearton End Farm, which also appears on the 1813 map to have been a drove. Some of earthwork bank sections appear as rectangular or subrectangular platforms with ditches on two or three sides. Both extant trackways are about the same width as the earthwork bank features (c.20 metres). On aerial photographs taken in 2019 and recent remote sensing data, some of the earthworks in the west half of the features appear to have been ploughed-levelled (1-6).
