Description

Probable medieval settlement boundary ditches and field boundaries are visible on historic aerial photographs as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located on the south side of Main Road at Drayton Parslow, between The Lower Farm and Chapel Lane centred at SP 84192 28614, parallel linear ditches at Chestnut Farm are between about 2.5 and 5 metres wide and between 25 and 125 metres in length, aligned NW-SE perpendicular to Main Road. Also visible is a possible subrectangular pond about 21 metres long and 16 metres at its longest. South of Lower Farm is a linear ditch about 53 x 4 metres is aligned N-S that appears to be part of a pre-inclosure field boundary. Adjacent Chapel Lane, two possible small ponds or ditches lie adjacent to a three-sided subrectangular boundary ditch of uncertain function that encloses an internal area about 57 x 17 metres, though a SE facing side is not evident. The latter features are no longer visible on aerial photographs taken in 2019 as they are covered by residential housing in North Close and Bates Gardens. Recent remote sensing data and aerial photographs taken in 2019 indicates that the remaining features appear to have been levelled (1-4).
