- EXTRACTIVE PIT (Post-Medieval to Modern - 1540 AD to 1999 AD)
Description
Two extractive pits visible post medieval/modern date are visible on historic aerial photographs and as earthworks, and later as cropmarks, and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located approximately 350m to the north of Claydon Brook, Winslow, and centred at SP 76670 26714. Two irregular shaped pits, against the field boundaries, are visible on aerial photographs cut in to ridge and furrow earthworks; visible only as cropmarks on modern aerial photographs. Land use changed to arable after 2017: the earthworks are still present on 2017 lidar visualisation but are ploughed away by 2021. The underlying geology is river terrace deposits overlying Weymouth Mudstone. (1-3)
