Description
Aerial photographs show cropmarks of atleast 2 buildings. The form of the larger building is indicative of Roman corridor villa. The second, south-west of the villa, appears as rectangular, single celled structure. Further potential cropmarks may indicate additional structures within the same field (B9).
Roman building debris (no details) was reported by Underhill (B1) in 1948 at Flint Hall (SU 77708933), on the information of A H Cocks, although he himself (B2) was unable to find anything about it, apart from the suggestion that some of the brick and tile built into the house may be of Roman origin. Pevsner says a building of Roman date has been reported here, but Brannigan could find no confirmation although he thought the site a good one. Cocks, a competent archaeologist judging by his excavation of the Roman villa complex to the
east (SU 78 NE 5), said that there were four other Roman houses in the valley in addition to the excavated villa(s). (B1-5)
Flint Hall (SU 7765 8930) appears an entirely 19/20th C structure, and has no Roman material in its fabric. On the NE side of the house the buildings of Amazon Farm (formerly Flint Hall Farm) are of older construction and on field investigation a fragment of probable tegulae tile was found embedded in a flint rubble wall. In a field under plough on the E side of the farm Md tile and sherds together with small fragments of possible Roman tegulae and imbrex were found in area SU 77978939. The amount of material found did not form a sufficient concentration to indicate a building site.
The farmer could offer no further information. (6)
