Description

Ridge and furrow field systems of medieval date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks, levelled earthworks and cropmarks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in the parish of East Claydon, within grid square SP72NE, and centred at SP 75138 25854. Clear earthworks of ridge and furrow with a furlong boundary and plough headlands, crossed in places by later drainage ditches, are visible on the 1940s aerial photographs. Modern land use of arable and improved grasslands has levelled all earthworks but those immediately next Sion Hill Farm and around the National Grid Substation, the construction of which has left only small corners of fields where earthworks are still visible on lidar visualisations.
