Description

An extractive pit of probable post medieval/modern date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and later levelled earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located 750m south west of Swanbourne House and centred at SP 79526 26427. The pit is elongated in shape, 98x18m, and is on superficial geology deposits of Diamicton; it is in the middle of the field, so is probably a marl pit, and in the middle of ridge and furrow earthworks. Late 20th century agricultural land use has removed most of the earthworks except for a deeper area at the south which remains as a pond, surrounded by trees, on modern aerial photographs and historic mapping and is also visible on lidar visualisation as a rounded depression.
