Description

Field systems as evidenced by ridge and furrow earthworks and furlong boundaries with other boundaries and ditches, of medieval and post medieval date, are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks, levelled earthworks and cropmarks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located throughout the parish of Winslow and centred at SP 76898 27470. These field systems were almost continuous across the whole parish with only gaps for settlements, shrunken settlements (Shipton and potential settlement site for MBC23072 - Saxon hamlet of Deneburgham suggested by place-name evidence), a 19th century railway wharf and 20th century gas works north of Winslow. An 18th century industrial spy (R.R. Angerstein) travelled through the area in 1754, on his way from Liverpool to London, and he remarked on the fields being ‘divided in to strips 24-30 feet wide and slightly raised at the centre’ suggesting it is for ‘the same purpose as ditches without any loss of land’. See project shapefile for more detail (direction and area). (1-20)
