Monument record MBC43504 - Medieval and/or post medieval ridge and furrow cultivation, plough headlands and boundary ditches in Soulbury parish.

An almost contiguous swathe of medieval and/or post medieval ridge and furrow cultivation, plough headlands and boundary ditches, remnants of the former common open-field system, is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located across the western half of Soulbury parish and centred at SP 87761 26725, these blocks are aligned both SW-NE and SE-NW mixed together, with no apparent dominance. To the SW of Hollingdon there are several areas where ridge and furrow has not been recorded, which may have been areas of historic pasture or possibly the result of arable cultivation practices removing any trace of what ridge and furrow once existed there. Almost all the ridge and furrow cultivation blocks are visible as extant earthworks on aerial photographs taken in the 1940s, but aerial photographs taken in 2019 and recent remote sensing data indicate that some many blocks have been plough-levelled due to changes to post-war agricultural regimes from the dominance of permanent pasture as described in the 1925 Victoria County History to more arable cultivation. Only around Soulbury village and within Liscombe Park do ridge and furrow earthworks survive in the condition first mapped by mid-20th century aerial photographs (1-24).

Located across the eastern half of Soulbury parish, these blocks are aligned both SW-NE and SE-NW mixed together, with no apparent dominance. Almost all the ridge and furrow cultivation blocks are visible as extant earthworks on aerial photographs taken in the 1940s, but aerial photographs taken in 2019 and recent remote sensing data indicate that some blocks have been plough-levelled due to changes to post-war agricultural regimes (25-33).

Two blocks of medieval and/or post medieval ridge and furrow cultivation, remnants of the former common open-field system, is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located E of Rocklane Farm and centred at SP 89536 24864, the two ridge and furrow blocks are part of a much more extensive swathe of contiguous cultivation earthworks that extend across the parish of Soulbury. On aerial photographs taken in 2015-2019 and recent remote sensing data, the blocks appear to have been destroyed by the construction of the A4146 Wing bypass (34-35).
