Description

Remains of medieval village shrinkage is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in a field on the corner of School Lane and Fenny lane in Stoke Hammond village and centred at SP 88101 29866, the site comprises several linear earthwork banks, ditches and undulating ground that might suggest settlement remains. Also visible is a circular earthwork mound about 12.5 metres in diameter whose function is uncertain but could possibly be a windmill mound. Aerial photographs taken in 2019 suggest that the earthworks remain extant at that time (1-3).

Probable medieval village earthworks to the east of Stoke Hammond parish, visible on air photographs at SP 8809 2985. A pattern of banks and ditches are what survives of the settlement on the north-western extent of the modern village. It may be contemporary with fields of ridge and furrow in the surrounding area (4).
