Description

Remains of probable medieval village shrinkage is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located between Moat Farm House and Hunters Lodge in Stoke Hammond village and centred at SP 88280 29145, a series of parallel linear boundary ditches are visible on the west and east side of Leighton Road. The 1881 1st Edition OS map shows that three of these ditches remained extant boundaries at that time. The ditches are all aligned WSW-ENE and suggest medieval land or toft boundaries. By 1973, the ditches east of Leighton Road and north of Moat house Farm have been plough levelled and by 1993 those west of the road have been covered by the new residential housing at Mount Pleasant. Centred at SP 88193 28987 is a subrectangular earthwork platform that measures about 53 metres W-E and 24 metres N-S. Aerial photographs taken in 2019 indicate that the platform probably remains extant (1-5).
