Description

Post medieval tree enclosure rings, water channels and other landscape parkland features are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and cropmarks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in the grounds of Liscombe Park and centred at SP 88724 26148, these features are elements of the landscape parkland. Partly within and partly bounding Black Spinney is a subrectangular 5 metres wide water channel leading to the ornamental lake. Also within Black Spinney and centred at SP 88661 26080 is a 2 metres wide rectangular bank about 2 metres wide encloses an internal area about 15 x 9.5 metres that may be the foundations of a former building. Centred at SP 88362 25539 is a cropmark ring ditch, being a circular ditch about 3 metres wide that encloses an internal area about 36 metres in diameter. This feature precisely matches the location of an ornamental tree ring clearly shown on the 1887 1st Edition OS map and is one of several of similar size within the parkland. This feature has been mapped to avoid future misinterpretation as a possible prehistoric ring ditch. Centred at SP 88867 25944 is an earthwork ring ditch, being a circular ditch about 1 metre wide that encloses an internal area about 30 metres in diameter. Within the ditch are sections of boundary bank. This feature is sited immediately adjacent the location of an ornamental tree ring clearly shown on the 1887 1st Edition OS map and is one of several documented examples of similar size within the parkland. Located adjacent the ornamental lake and centred at SP 488831 226277, a 4 metres wide and 30 metres long earthwork bank, flanked by 2 metres wide ditches is aligned SW-NE. it appear to be a section of trackway or road, but its date and function are uncertain (1-5).
