Description

A probable medieval sinuous double-ditched trackway or road is visible on historic aerial photographs as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in fields between Rocklane Farm and Ash Farm and centred at SP 88493 25170, a trackway with a 1.5 to 3.5 metres wide ditch on either side that varies in width between 4 and 20 metres. Fragmentary and slight earthwork banks can be seen to the outside of the boundary ditch. The trackway winds through blocks of medieval ridge and furrow cultivation, which appear to respect it, suggesting contemporaneity. It extends for about 1280 metres from SP89145 25046 to SP 87918 25232, passing Liscombe Park just north of Rocklane Farm, then immediately north of the medieval windmill mound (HER No. 0245700000), crossing Soulbury Road and terminating just north of Ash Farm. Visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken in 1946, the features are no longer visible on aerial photographs taken in 2019, but some sections adjacent Soulbury Road were visible as cropmarks in 2000 (1-4).
