Description
Medieval shrunken settlement remains are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in a field adjacent The Green in Soulbury village and centred at SP 88149 27340, a curvilinear ditch with an internal division creates two ditched enclosures (long sides aligned SW-NE) abutting extant field boundaries, one irregularly shaped enclosure about 68 x 33 metres at its widest and one rectilinear, about 45 x 36 metres. Three adjacent parallel linear ditches aligned SW-NE may be the remains of trackways. It is notable that the features are aligned along the suggested route of a possible Roman road between Ermine Street and Dorchester-on-Thames (HER No 0203500000). Aerial photographs taken in 2019 indicate that some the features are now covered by new residential housing on The Green and Stewkley Road (1-2).
