Description

An extensive system of medieval boundary ditches, sinuous hollow ways or trackways are visible on historic aerial photographs as earthworks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in fields east of Soulbury village between Wellmead Farm and Chelmscote Manor Farm and centred at SP 88832 27320, the earthworks extend across an area about 221 metres N-S and 559 metres W-E. The connected system of sinuous parallel and overlapping ditches encloses two small blocks of medieval ridge of ridge and furrow cultivation, with the majority of the trackways or hollow ways passing to the south of these, generally aligned W-E. These pass through a noted area of lower lying wet ground (HER No 0987800000) so it is possible that some of these ditch features are natural in origin. These ditches connect to a further system of boundary ditches and hollow ways to the west (HER No 0658800000). Aerial photographs taken in 2019 suggest that the earthworks remain extant at that time (1-3).
