Description

The Shieling was built in 1939 as an 'All-Europe House' as designed by Elizabeth Denby, and represents the pioneering ideas on high quality social housing that she published in her book 'Europe Re-housed'.
The exterior shows some evidence of economy of materials, with only the side elevations in brickwork and with gables constructed as roughcast and shiplap infill, and the interior appears to retain much original detail reflecting design principles of the period. The house is set within a domestic garden which slopes steeply down to the rear, with two modest terraces of lawn/beds, and with a line of shrubs partially screening the lower vegetable patch/orchard beyond. The maturity of the trees suggests that the orchard pre-dated the house. The house comprises part of the model community at Jordans (B1).
