Monument record 1539900000 - South of Chinnor Road, Pitch Green

Features and deposits dating from the 12th to 17th centuries were identified during trial trench evaluation. The majority of features dating from the 13th century. Residual 13th-century pottery was also recovered from the later features. Ceramic building material relates to a similar date range. The alignment of the ditches suggest rectangular enclosures or plot boundaries. At least two phases of differing alignments were present (B1-2).
An L-shaped ditch may form part of a rectilinear field system forming the original layout. By the 13th century these boundaries were replaced with larger, more substantial ditches. The later medieval period saw a number of pits excavated across the site, and being cut into the earlier features. The pits were generally shallow and their uses unclear. The low volume of artifactual material suggests that the site was on the periphery of any settlement (B3).
