Description
C19 school house. L-shaped building in red brick with slate roof and stone detailing around window
and doors. Single chimney at eaves height, in l-shaped return of roof. Single storey with steep
roofline and tall ridge. Windows are metal framed lead lights, separated by stone mullions. Timber
planked door. This building is visually prominent in views along School End and is of local interest as it was the original school house and is still used as part of the school. The building is also of local architectural and historic interest, as a good example of C19th school building, as found in a number of the District’s villages and towns. A local note building within the Conservation Area of Great Horwood (B1).
A handsome and commodious school-building has this year (1861) been erected from a design of Mr R C Hussey, architect, London. It consists of one room 52 1/2 feet by 18 feet, divided by a curtain into two, for boys and girls; with two lobbies and a class-room, 27 feet by 14 feet. The building is of brick, with Bath stone jambs, and mullions for doors and windows; and the estimated cost of the whole (including repairs to the house for the teacher) £852, is being raised by subscription, aided by grants from the National and Diocesan Societies. A residence for the schoolmaster (standing on the site) has been liberally granted, together with £50, by the Warden and Scholars of New College (B2).
