Description

The original town centre gasworks was established by a Mr Hulls (either John or Joseph), who built a private gasworks. Two accounts exist, the first that John Hulls was contracted to improve the town's street lighting maintaining the oil lamps, he later experimented with the use of coalgas, having his own gasometer in Paul's Row. He lit private shops and street lamps. The other being a Joseph Hull establishing a gasworks nearby on Easton Street which operated until 1864 closing due to competition from the new town gas company. One or both could be correct but no gasworks are shown on maps. Not known if anything survives (B1).
NGRs approximate.
