Description

James Copcutt, gas engineer built a gasworks to light his own premises. Information from Tony Marks.
Survival not known (B1).
1854, 1883 and 1899 trade directories record James Copcutt at 26 New Road (now High Street). Advert in the Journal of Gas Lighting, Water Supply and Sanitary Improvement of January 24th 1865, for Copcutt & Co Gas Engineers, Gas-Fitters & Contractors: 'James Copcutt, 20 years practical and consulting Engineer, advises on all matter of Gas Lighting and Hot-Water Works. Sole inventor of the Double-Power Retort' (B2).
Location of premises at 26 New Road possibly at what is now 28 High Street. The large property at 26 High Street is shown on 1877 and 1879 OS mapping as a garden, and the post office was built here sometime between 1883 and 1899, so presumably James Copcutt's premises must have been next door (B3).
