Summary

Probable natural mound used as a garden feature at Dropmore - Possible bell barrow in the grounds of Dropmore House. Field investigations carried out in 1974 found it more likely to be a natural sand and gravel outcrop which has been considerably altered during the construction of an arbour on its summit.

Plan Form - CIRCULAR
NEAR DROPMORE MANSION IS STUB MOUND: ARTIFICIAL EMBANKMENT FORMED OF OLD ROOTS OF TREES & GRAVEL, PLANTED WITH FERNS & SHRUBS, FROM WHICH A VIEW OF 40-50 MILES IS OBTAINED (B1).
ROOT MOUND, POSSIBLY A BELL BARROW (B2).
PROB NOT BARROW, BUT NATURAL GRAVEL OUTCROP ALTERED WHEN ARBOUR MADE ON SUMMIT (B3).

Root Mound at Dropmore, possibly a bell barrow [Former interpretation] (B2).

A short distance from the mansion (of Dropmore) is a spot known as Stub Mound, an artificial embankment formed of old roots of trees and gravel, planted with ferns and various shrubs (B1).

This is an extremely doubtful bell barrow; it is probably a natural sand and gravel outcrop which has been considerably altered during the construction of an arbour on its summit (B6).
