Description

The Old School House is evident in the 1900 historic mapping series. The Old School House sits adjacent to the village School to which it once directly related. Both buildings occupy a prominent position overlooking the village green and at the heart of the settlement. The School House sits behind a railed boundary wall and is constructed in a well proportioned T form in red brick with stone sills and lintels, decorative timber barge boards to the gable ends under slate roof. Fenestration is timber sash windows and an original bay extends from the front projection. Rear windows are significantly narrower than those at the front and therefore appear proportionately longer and thinner. To the rear the building has been largely rendered and painted white with a single storey addition later raised to a gabled roof form. The rear of the dwelling overlooks the school play areas and currently sits stepped back from the side windows of the school classroom. The Old School House is considered to meet the criteria laid out in Historic England Advice Note 7 : ‘Local Heritage Listing’ as a NDHA for reasons of age, architectural and aesthetic interest, historic interest as well as group value with other historic buildings in the village notably the directly related school. The building also meets the emerging VALP criteria for NDHAs in respect of evidential, historic, group value, aesthetic and architectural interest (B1).
