Description
18 High Street is very similar in form and features to the adjacent property at 20 High Street which is listed at grade II and dates to the early 19th century. Although the roof forms are differ it is likely that they were constructed at around the same time and display the same elevation form, fenestration styles at second floor level as well as matching radial and arched gauged brick headers over windows and doorways. No. 18 was originally a dwelling house and alterations to facilitate the commercial use as the village post office include the addition of a good quality shop front facia, enlargement of the ground floor windows to single pane units and brackets for hanging shop sign. Additionally the building has a red post box sunk into the front elevation and retains the old shop safe and a number of other period features internally including a cast iron fire place and surround in the rear first floor bedroom. The property was extended to the side later in the 19th century and this side addition is believed to have been the post masters dwelling while the earlier building served as the Post Office. No. 18 High Street meets the Historic England Criteria as a NDHA for the following reasons: age, rarity, architectural interest, group value with other remaining similar buildings (No. 20) as well as its social and communal value relating to the history of the village (B1).
