Description
ROMAN TILE SCATTER ADJACENT TO SITE & DIRECTLY CONNECTED WITH IT (B1).
(Area SP 972136) Scatter of tile in wood at Ashridge, near Tring. Just east of tumulus (SP 97 SE 7) and a little north of the pond (SP 97171344). Much undergrowth and nettles in summer; best investigated in winter. The site is said to have been trenched by Boy Scouts recently (B12).
This can be accepted as a probable Roman site as the information was handed in by Dr John Morris of London University, who specializes in the Roman period, but note adjacent Roman building site, possible temple, SP 91 SE 1. (B13).
Mr C L Matthews (b15) was contacted and from this information it is now certain that this tile scatter is directly connected with the Ro building site at SP 9713 1362 (see SP 91 SE 1). Within the area of SP 971 136 only a few pieces of Ro tile are now to be found (B15).
