Monument record 1515500000 - North of Bishopstone

Enclosure visible as cropmark on aerial photographs (B1).

A subrectangular enclosure and linear features of probable Romano-British date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant cropmarks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located north of Bishopston, Stone with Bishopstone and Hartwell, and centred at SP 80570 10581. Linear cropmarks forming subrectangular enclosures, possibly with a trackway leading in to it, are visible on more recent aerial photographic coverage from APGB. They were not visible on photographs included in the loan from the Archive at Historic England. Photographs from the 1940s and 50s show a plough levelled field with no remains of ridge and furrow earthworks; this is in common with other areas where cropmarks were mapped as part this project. Romano British pottery and finds have been recorded from fieldwalking in surrounding fields, but also late prehistoric flint flakes, medieval and post medieval pottery and finds. (2-3)
