Description

Vaches Manor appears to have been held by Richard de Turri in the early C13. After his death, it passed in 1271 to Richard de la Vache. It remained with that family until C15. Passed later to the Grey de Wintons, who sold it in 1506. After 1506 the manor belonged to John Colet, Dean of St Paul's & formed part of the endowment of St Paul's School (the trustees being the Mercers Company of London)(B4).

A large rectangular homestead moat; the ditch is now dry and very denuded (B3).
There are the remains of the foundations of a building within a moated space in Vatches Field; there are also distinct traces of a large fish pond (B2).
Air photographs reveal an entrance on the eastern arm of the moat, while there are also traces of disturbance further to the east (possibly the fishpond mentioned by Sheahan). To the west of the moat is a slightly curved bank and ditch (B11).
Almost identical in plan with the cropmark site NW of Aylesbury (SP 81 SW 2) which may have been a Civil War redoubt (B11).
A trapezoidal homestead moat in a level pasture field, each arm being about 120.0m long and 15.0-20.0m wide. The moat is silted up, but is largely waterfilled or marshy, up to 1.5m deep. There are slight traces of an outer retaining bank on the S and W sides, and an inner bank in the SW corner. The entrance was in the middle of the E arm. The interior is disturbed, but no pattern of buildings can be recognised. To the E of the moat are a number of linear depressions. Their purpose cannot be ascertained, but they may be dried-up fishponds. The pond at SP8660 1278 is modern. Re-surveyed at 1:2500 (B13).
