Description

Geophysical survey carried out by Magnitude Surveys in July and August 2018 in advance of proposed bypass and HS2 railway construction identified weak anomalies interpreted as a possible rectangular ditched enclosure, aligned NE-SW and with a further possible enclose adjoining. See report for detail (B1).
The evaluation confirmed some of the anomalies identified by the geophyic survey, but failed to identify others. The enclosure recorded by geophysic survey was identified in trial tench evaluation and measured 1.38m wide and 0.75m deep. A single sherd of mid to late Bronze Age pottery was recovered from its fill. South-east of the enclosure, in Trench 36, two intercutting ditches were recorded. The earlier ditch, 1.42m wide and 0.62m deep, contained 3 sherds of mid to late Bronze Age pottery. These features likely related to the enclosure. To the north of the enclosure, an Iron Age pit was recorded in Trench 8 (B2).
