Description
The Wheeler family were maltsters in Wycombe from at least 1677 onwards and in 1808 Robert Wheeler formed a partnership with Andrew Biddle with a brewery in the High Street. Wheeler bought out Biddle's share in the business in 1827, forming a partnership with his sons in 1843. In 1854 the brewery was moved to Easton Street. The business remained in family hands, acquiring additional breweries and pubs and by 1898 was trading as Wheeler's Wycombe Breweries, with two breweries, 3 maltings and 184 freehold and leasehold pubs and beerhouses. The Easton Street brewery was enlarged and a mineral water plant installed at this time. In 1905 there were further improvements to the brewery. The business became a private company in 1917 and in 1929 was bought by Ashbys of Staines, which was in turn bought by Simonds the following year. Simonds decided to close both the Ashbys and Wheelers breweries in 1931. The Easton Street brewery was sold to Wycombe Borough Council and demolished in 1931-2, with the site redeveloped for a new Post Office and shops (B1).
