Description

LARGE ENTRENCHMENTS AT HEDGERLEY DEAN, FROM WHERE DITCH RAN WEST TO EAST BURNHAM. LOCAL TRADITION OF SITE OF BATTLE BETWEEN THE SAXONS AND THE DANES (LYSONS 1813)(B1-3).
HEDGERLEY DEAN WAS IN FARNHAM ROYAL PARISH. NGR TO AREA OF HEDGERLEY DEAN OPPOSITE EAST BURNHAM (B4-5).
NO ENTRENCHMENTS TRACED, NEAREST ARE CASS 00525 & CASS 01525, 2-4KM NE OF BURNHAM (B6).


Ther were large and deep entrenchments at Hedgerley Dean (area SU 9687 - OS 6" Bucks 48 1883) from whence a ditch ran westward to East Burnham, ascribed by tradition to the site of a battle between Danes and Saxons (B1a). (Nothing visible on available Aps (RAF 1961)) (B3).
