Summary

Possible medieval cultivation terraces recorded in field survey on the slopes of Southend Hill. The southern slopes of the hill were remodelled in the medieval or early post-medieval period to form an elaborate series of cultivation terraces.

Description

Dimensions - Length 600m, Width 100m.
Plan Form - Semicircular.
(B1-2,B4: see CASS 01271).
SERIES OF LYNCHETS: BEST EXAMPLE IN THE COUNTY (B3-4).
SURVIVE TO A HEIGHT OF 1.5-2M. KNOWN LOCALLY AS 'LINCES'. EXTEND BETWEEN NGR'S. WORKING PLATFORMS ATTAIN MAX WIDTH OF 15M. NO ADJACENT HABITATION NOW APPARENT. Overgrown with scrub known locally as 'linces' (B7 and B5).

(Centred: SP 918164) Cultivation Terraces (NR)(B6).
The terraces extend from SP 9171 1675 to SP 9219 1642 and occupy about 9.0 acres. The working platforms attain a maximum width of 15.0m. No adjacent habitation is now apparent. Published survey (25") correct (B8).
