Description

Plan Form - RECTANGULAR
"Roman building site. Large quantity of Roman roofing tile (tegulae and imbrex) scattered over the field with much hard clunch which has been pulled out of wall footings by the plough. Also a certain amount of ferruginous ironstone which may have come out of buried walls. Pottery and other small finds made it clear that the building was of substantial size and importance. A few fragments of hypocaust tile were observed and it is probably safe to regard this building as a villa. Visited 20.4.1953" AT NGR (B1 and B6).

Romano-British sherds found at Marsworth and coins at Pitstone may well be from a single site: the "substantial building" recorded by OS (B7).
(SP 92611597) Roman building (R) (site of) (NAT) (B8).
The published site is situated on low lying ground about 100.0m above sea level with an open vista approximately 1 Km north of the Lower Icknield Way (LIN 2). Perambulation confirmed stone, fragmentary Roman brick, oyster shells, and a single isolated sherd of 3rd/4th century domestic ware. No tile was evident nor were there any extant surveyable features; at present under hay stubble. Nothing noted on RAF Aps (B9).
BU 58 Listed as the possible site of a Roman villa (B10).
